MAY 5 HSM ASSEMBLY: CELEBRATING HSM SENIORS AND HEALTH CAREER WORKSHOP

SENIORS

HSM Seniors are an awesome group of scholars. We know the last days of High School are supposed to include lots of activities and celebrations. Unfortunately, we are still experiencing COVID -19 related restrictions.

We decided to spend half of our May assembly acknowledging all of our seniors, and interviewing a couple HSM seniors. Our Co-Host, Malaya Jones and Nathaniel McKinnie, interviewed seniors Milan Breland and Amir Freeman.

HEALTH CAREERS

We surveyed our HSM students and found that roughly one-half of students are interested in a Sports Medicine or a Health career. So, the second half our assembly was dedicated to exposing students to the many career options in the Health industry.

Our partners at the Umoja Health Project presented an interactive workshop on the various health careers. Below are the slides from Milagro and Makeen's presentation.

MARCH 24 HSM ASSEMBLY: HONOR ROLL AND JEOPARDY ADVISORY CONTEST

Congratulations to Dr. Salazar's Advisory H class for winning the Advisory H contest, and congrats to Mr. Goetz's Advisory L class for winning during the Advisory L competition. When we return to campus, these Advisory classes will receive a pizza party!

Kudos to the following HSM Honor Roll students:

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Students in the Health & Sports Medicine Magnet engage in a rigorous curriculum that connects athletics to biological principles. Our motto is: Mens sana in corpore sano, Latin for "A sound mind in a healthy body." We aim to educate our students accordingly. Through Project-Based Learning, our students learn and apply academic content to authentic health-related areas. Students have the opportunity to obtain real-world experience in the area of sports medicine by providing physical therapy support to our nationally renowned athletics program. Through our Magnet assemblies, partnership with the Umoja Health Project, annual blood drives, health fairs, guest speakers and field trips, students interact directly with medical professionals and gain first-hand exposure to health professions.

ELECTIVES & ADVANCED COURSES

Students have access to an extensive array of A-G courses, including thematically-aligned courses related to sports medicine. In our Sports Therapy progression of classes, students learn about the human body from a certified, professional athletic trainer. They also learn specifics about common athletic injuries and how to treat them. Students in the Advanced courses, work with the athletic trainer in caring for our athletes before, during and after sporting events.

WEST LA COLLEGE PARTNERSHIP

HSM has partnered with West LA College to provide a pathway for students that choose to go directly into the workforce. The Fundamental Skill Certificate fulfills many of the requirements needed to go from high school graduate to an entry level position in the Healthcare field. These courses can also be taken to make you more desirable to a competitive college. You receive college and High School credit for taking and passing these courses. Contact Mr. Rivas (College Counselor) or Mr. Ghong (Assistant Principal) for more information.
